JOSHUA
and THE HOLY ROLLERS - 02/24/2020
Weaving between the melancholic story-telling of folk and sweat-drenched vocals of rock and roll, the music of Joshua & The Holy Rollers is equal parts lullabye and banger. Rich with mellow vibes and the big reverbs of a singer songwriter who has stories to tell. With the gritty guitar riffs of a band that wants to get loud and an authentic.

Facebook
Columbia-based Paul Weber and the
Scrappers is made up by vocalist/guitarist/harpist
Paul Weber, guitarist Dave Dearnley, drummer
Justin Hickerson and bassist Jesse Mudd. The quartet
plays original honky tonk — the kind of music that
transports you to a dusty middle-of-nowhere dive bar
and makes foot-tapping an involuntary
reaction. Delivering ’60s-style country music
complete with bitter lyrics about heartbreak, slow
tempos and minor chords, Paul Weber and the
Scrappers are a must-see.

Crain, Guitarist Jeremy Freeze and
Bassist Dan Browning, Drummer Rex
McMurry and multi-instrumentalist, Rob
Frye. The band was formed in Columbia,

The
Wimshurst's Machine is an eclectic, award-winning

The
band is a project born by the music passion of
each component and a mad idea, developed between
friends and colleagues with little time to play
together "in person". Together with the "good old"
way to make music (jamming), TWM mixes real
instruments and synthetic sounds even during live
events.

The Butlers...Here to fill
your ears with milky, musical goodness.
The Many Colored Death is a alt rock
trio based out of Columbia, Missouri. Formed in 2010,
the band has internalized the aesthetic and influence
of acts such as Soundgarden, King’s X, Rush and Foo
Fighters, then spun those elements out into a fresh
new style. Described by one fan as “a silky mixture of
70’s rock and early 90’s grunge.” Featuring a rhythm
section that would make John Bonham and John Paul
Jones proud, and a guitarist/vocalist who is equal
parts David Gilmour, King Buzzo, and Chris Cornell,
their brand of rock is both quiet and loud, dark and
light.
Born in Utah and raised in West Texas,
Ray Lynch (aka Raymond Lynch) spent the
earlier part of his musical career as a performer on
the classical guitar and the lute. As a composer and
producer, Lynch has won 3 Billboard Awards, written
five albums, and sold over 2 million albums without
the benefit of live performances or videos.
Columbia, Missouri trio The
Hooten Hallers are a high-energy blues-rock band known
for hard-traveling and wild live shows, with a
seemingly endless tour schedule. The myriad of
influences in their music incorporates elements of
rhythm & blues, rock’n’roll, honky tonk, jazz,
soul, and punk with a thematic penchant for the
strange and the unexplained. Their live shows take the
listener on a seamless ride from unapologetically
raucous blues on the lap steel and bass sax, to a
sweet three part harmony country ballad, to a romping
dance number.
Dale
Watson, keeper of the true country music flame, latest
album Call Me Insane, was recorded in Austin
with veteran producer Lloyd Maines (Robert Earl Keen,
Jerry Jeff Walker, etc.). The Austin-based honky-tonker
carries on in the tradition of Johnny Cash, Waylon
Jennings and Willie Nelson with his “Ameripolitan” brand
of American roots music.
The
Cactus Blossoms sound
uncannily like a sibling harmony act that just stepped
off the stage of the Grand Ol' Opry or the Louisiana
Hayride in the '40s or '50s, and there's a good reason
for that -- guitarists and singers Page Burkum and Jack Torrey are brothers, and
their voices fit together in a way that suggests a
modern day approximation of what the Everly Brothers and the Louvin Brothers could
deliver.
Beak are an English
electronic music band, consisting of Geoff Barrow (of Portishead) with Billy Fuller (Robert
Plant) and Will Young (Moon Gangs), who replaced Matt
Williams (MXLX, Fairhorns) in 2016.
Beak
released their self-titled debut album on 16 November
2009. The music was recorded live in one room with no overdubs or
repair, only using edits to create arrangements. All
tracks were written over a twelve-day session in Bristol, England.
Opal
Agafia & The Sweet Nothings is an Ozark
Mountain Soul Roots n Roll group from the hills of
Arkansas. Lead vocalist and songwriter, Opal
Agafia, entered the music scene in January of
2015. Shortly after playing in local joints with
various musicians, Opal Agafia & The Sweet
Nothings, developed into a full string
band–fiddle, mandolin, guitar, dobro, telecaster
guitar, electric bass, and drums. Together this
band puts on a high energy show while focusing on
the words and instrumental combos.

Aina Cook isn’t beating around the
bush. From the first notes of her band’s self-titled
new record to the last song title, her musical ways
and means are clear.
Within the first two seconds of opener
“Brand New Knife,” Cook conveys curiosity and emotion
through wordless vocalizing. Just fifteen seconds in,
she ups the ante with a growling statement of purpose.
Skip to the end of the record and
you’ll find closer “Born to Sing the Blues.” The
record’s ten songs connect the dots between its first
sounds and closing argument. Cook possesses a
powerhouse voice, and she spends it exhorting
listeners to reach inside and discover their own wells
of strength, soul, melancholy and regret.
A former member of the Columbia music
scene now based in St. Louis, Cook’s passionate,
expressive sound recalls modern blues and soul royalty
such as Susan Tedeschi and Sharon Jones as well as
more pop-oriented artists such as Leona Lewis and
Gavin DeGraw.

THE RUM DRUM RAMBLERS - 11/05/2018
Facebook
Soundcloud
From Christian Schaeffer at the
Riverfront Times:
The backward-glancing trio Rum Drum
Ramblers is most commonly thought of as a blues band,
and certainly, the young men in the group seek to
revive a certain strand of acoustic, prewar blues
music. But after listening to its second album, Mean
Scene, one could argue that the Ramblers is a soul
band; just listen for a few minutes to guitarist and
singer Mat Wilson’s sweet, husky voice and feel the
easy rhythm of the best early R&B singers. Or
perhaps it’s best to describe it as a country act:
There’s so much twang-bangin’ and swift-pickin’ on
“Nothin’ New” that Buck Owens is probably tipping his
ten-gallon hat to these fellows from the great beyond.
But then, terming the Rum Drum Ramblers as country (or
blues or soul) would ignore the jazzy underpinnings
that Joey Glynn pumps out of his sonorous upright bass
and the forceful blowing of its guest horn players.
Better yet to put genre tags aside and let the
Ramblers interpretation of American folk idioms fan
you like a humid breeze...

ANDREW RYAN - 10/22/2018

Andrew Ryan is a St. Louis-based
producer turned musician after being in the industry
for 13 years. Ryan is a graduate of the
Conservatory of Recording Arts & Sciences (CRAS)
and shortly afterward landed an internship with indie
rock recording legend Steve Albini at his Chicago
studio, Electrical Audio.
Ryan released his freshman album
"Across Currents" on September 29th, 2017. The
album is meant to be a shadow of Ryan's life over the
previous years touching subjects like his relationship
with his daughter, the loss of one of his best
friends, the general pressures of life, and the
restlessness leading up to this point. It has a
middle-of-the-road tone that mixes alt-country with
elements of indie rock. Songs like "Take Aim" combine
quiet, guitar picking with soothing cello, toy-like
glockenspiel, and melodic piano to create sounds you'd
hear in "Perks of a Wallflower" or "13 Reasons Why."
Other songs such as "Fire" stay true to the indie rock
feel with feedback and reverse guitars driving a
steady, almost anthem-like melody. The 12-song album
was written and mixed by Ryan and later cut to vinyl
by six-time, Grammy award winning producer, Jeff
Powell.
Notably, Ryan and his band have
supported Rayland Baxter, Jay Allen, Andrew
Bryant (of Water Liars).
RAE FITZGERALD - 10/08/2018...

Urgency is a friend to Rae Fitzgerald.
While much of contemporary music shies away from
emotionality and embraces a cool detachment, this 27
year-old’s intricate—and at times,
eviscerating—lyric-work forces the listener to
embrace universal emotions of sorrow, hope and
bewildered wonder.
Born south of St. Louis and raised in
the Muscle Shoals area of Alabama, Fitzgerald has
honed her craft in iconic cities of musical
innovation. She’s spent extended periods of time in
Bakersfield, California, and, most recently, Austin,
Texas, though she considers Columbia, Missouri
home.
Lyrically heavy, the crux of
Fitzgerald’s work is the autobiographical depiction
of life changing situations, relationships and
observations. This creative writing major’s words
are heavy-hitting—a strength she accentuates with
dreamy vocals, ethereal melodies and grooving beats.

Numbers' broad range of influences and long process of

The image Kozelek (Sunkiommon) paints of his life as
both an artist and just an average guy is very
attractive. For fans, it reinforces the idea that the
honesty we hear in his songs is actually there in the
person; it hasn't been fabricated for the sake of the
art. And when I teasingly suggest, at the end of our
conversation, that the track "Gentle Moon" from the
highly anticipated Ghosts of the Great Highway -- the
debut album under Kozelek's newly formed Sun Kil Moon
moniker -- deserves to be the love theme for every
romantic comedy released over the holiday season, his
response reveals a smile that cracks the sometimes tough
exterior on the other end of the line: "That would be

“There’s this fuckin’
band you’ve gotta see, They used to scare the livin’

The Tragically Hip was a band you had to see. The
Kingston quintet's reputation had preceded it to
Winnipeg, first stop on its inaugural cross-Canada
tour. Having spent the previous two years barnstorming
the pubs, clubs and beer halls of Ontario, the group
had released an eight-song, eponymous mini-album.
Smalltown Bringdown and Last American Exit were being
played at local radio and a feature on The New Music
had prepped Prairie audiences for a young band that
played no-frills rock 'n' roll. Rob Baker, Gordon
Downie, Johnny Fay, Paul Langlois and Gord Sinclair
looked like a gang -- a T-shirts and jeans group in an
age of teased hair and spandex. Their sound was an
improbable, riffing roar that left mouths agape.

STREET SPANKERS...01/21/08...
The magnificently indefinable Asylum Street Spankers
began in 1994 at a booze and hallucinogen-fueled party
at the Dabbs Hotel in Llano, Texas. There Christina
Marrs and Guy Forsyth met Wammo. During a night spent
singing and playing along the banks of the Llano River
they made a pact to keep the
all-night-sing-along-anything-goes spirit of that party
alive. Upon returning to Austin they gathered a few
like-minded pals and began playing free shows at clubs
and busking on the Guadalupe Street Drag. (Guadalupe was
known as Asylum Street because it led to the state, um,
hospital. A Spanker is someone who can play their
instrument vigorously and proficiently.)...MORE...

Led by the magnetic harmonies and songwriting of Joy
Mills and Tom Parker, this murmuration combines lyrics
and vocals that are all at once wistful and fierce,
haunting and soothing. Their approach is contemporary

harmonica and mandolin give front porch flavors to the
songs, while Aimee Zoe Tubbs provides the solid and
stylish foundation on drums and backing vocals.
Elemental themes create The Starlings' solid repertoire.

alt-rock, catchy pop, alt-country, even disco (yes,

all in the same song. With its sassy high-hat,
aggressive lyrics, snappy guitar, and Locke’s flights

From birth to age four I was lucky enough to frequently
sit at the feet of my dear ol’ pop in Parkville,
Missouri, while he strummed his guitar with his
brothers. Grandpa Rausch with a mountain dulcimer in his
lap or a harmonica to his lips, mama singin’ along . . .
I danced in the cigarette smoke and played ball in the

nose here and there and babies a-cryin’, but above all
the music never stopped.

sudden two years, I’m still learning how to alter
reality and live in the now...I'm just now beginning to
understand what the songs are trying to say to me, codes
for the journey Home. The Dharma
Dog gave me his eye, Mama gave me herself and the
clouds and I found my Baba
Buffalo (Anthony Kieraldo) at the cafe in front of
a tennis ball lemon tree. That's when I watched another
kind of White Buffalo be born, the kind that has people
for legs, dreams for a brain, music for a heart and the
movement shaking through it when it wakes.

YACHAY...
YACHAY is
pronounced 'YAH chai,' and is derived from Quechua,
the language of the Inkas.
YACHAY is a
sonic two piece vehicle born from the love of the
Mother Planet.... When Jeff and William met up in the
jungles of Peru, they had given up playing music...at
least, playing music with popular touring bands.
Instead, they immersed themselves in shamanic
experiences in the rain forest that ultimately would
lead them right back to what they'd left behind. In
short, they were bombarded on every sensory level with
the vital importance that the vibratory rate of sound
plays in the creation of reality...not simply in human
terms...but for all life on Planet Earth. When they
eventually returned to the United States, they decided
to see what would happen if they applied their
sonic-shamanic experiences to a musical vehicle...and
YACHAY was born. What they quickly discovered as they
started to play out was that people everywhere are
still hungry for what's real..in their ears, in their
hearts, in their lives.

LISA WALKER...
A number of albums put nature sounds and
music together and they generally fit one of three
categories. Either the nature sound is just spliced with
the music for effect, the musician does a call and
response kind of playback with birds and animals, or the
musician composes, using the nature sounds as an
integrated part of the music.
This later approach is what Lisa Walker does quite
stunningly. Lisa recognizes the natural beauty of the
whales' songs and they inspire her amazing original
compositions using violin with specially built
waterproof speakers so that her sound will resonate with
the whales' natural landscape. Her effort is unique in
that she has taken into consideration the seasonal
variation of the songs, the sonic character of different
underwater canyons and she uses loops and samples to
modulate the sound and emphasize the musicality in more
dramatic fashion. Lisa Walker shows a deep
under-standing of her subject and a remarkable capacity
for innovation. If you like deep space or ambient music,
this one is definitely one you will want to hear. - New
Age Voice January 2002

C3...
The Convergence Conspiracy Collective is
an ensemble of musicians and artists formed near the end
of 2002 with a desire to express a unified vision of
radically transformed consciousness: a human race which
"gets it", which has somehow miraculously grown up and
come to its senses. Ridiculous, yes, we know. Such a
thing could never happen, right? Impossible, and only
fools would choose to believe in such a thing. Right.
Well, happy fools are we.
